Modules

Tasks and Timeline:
Module 1: Introduction to Optics

This course aims to provide their background knowledge in essential physics / optics needed for the rest
of class. Topics include geometric optics and wave optics (interference, diffraction, etc.).

Module 2: Light-Tissue Interaction

In this course, we will learn basic light-tissue interactions and tissue optical properties.

Module 3: Optical Instrumentation

In this course, we will learn the common devices / instrumentations used in biophotonics, such as lasers,
detectors, spectrometers, etc.

Module 4: Biomedical Spectroscopy

In this course, we will learn various forms of spectroscopic technologies and their biomedical
applications. Specifically, we will introduce light-scattering spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy,
and Raman spectroscopy.

Module 5: Optical Coherence Tomography

In this course, we will learn Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a non-destructive high-resolution
tissue imaging modality. OCT has been widely used in ophthalmology.

Module 6: Biomedical Microscopy

In this course, we will learn how to design and implement a microscope. We will focus on fluorescence
microscopic technologies such as confocal microscopy and multi-photon microscopy.
