Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden
The Transplantation Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the largest
transplant center in the country and across Scandinavia. The hospital is conveniently located in the heart
of the city, easily reachable by bike and adjacent to one of Europe's largest Botanical gardens
(Botaniska). During breaks, fellows can enjoy long walks or have a vegetarian lunch amidst the beautiful
surroundings.
At our center, we perform a comprehensive range of organ transplantations, including kidney, liver,
heart, lung(s), intestine, uterus, pancreas, islet cells, and multivisceral transplantations. Annually, we
conduct around 200 kidney transplantations, with the majority from deceased donors and about 20%
from living donors. Notably, we also perform around 20 ABO incompatible kidney transplantations a
year, the highest number in Scandinavia.
Our Transplantation Center consists of a dedicated Transplantation Ward with 12-18 beds, where all
patients undergo the above-mentioned transplantations. After surgery, patients are placed on Ward
139, where our Renal team provides care. The usual ward stay is 4-5 days in uncomplicated cases.
Additionally, we admit patients from different Renal departments in the country who require care after
kidney transplantation due to various complications such as rejection, infection, ureter strictures, and
transplantectomy.
Once discharged from the ward, patients are either followed by our Renal team at the Outpatient
Department for a period of 1 week up to 3 months or directly transferred to their Home Renal
department, which can be anywhere in Sweden, as our Transplant Center covers an area with
approximately 3.8 million people. Our follow-up policy includes monitoring patients in the outpatient
ward twice a week during the first month after kidney transplantation, then once a week in the second
month, and once every two weeks in the third month.
The Renal team comprises 5 Consultant Nephrologists, two of whom are Ph.D. students engaged in
clinical research. Two consultants, including the Supervisor, have a Ph.D. title and are also involved in
clinical research. In addition to the consultants, 1-2 Fellows in nephrology receive training within the
team.
Currently, the Renal team is conducting several clinical research projects, including ABO incompatible
transplantation, the INTERCEPT trial, a prospective study on kidney transplantation and B-cell and
plasma cell diseases, and the Sailor study, among others.
The main clinical areas of focus for the Renal team are:
During the Traineeship program, fellows will have the opportunity to learn about various topics,
including:
The Traineeship program's duration is 4-12 weeks, during which fellows will receive support to settle into
their new environment. The designated staff and the host mentor will provide an introduction, covering
safety, personal matters, and computer systems. Fellows will be given a working space with access to a
computer. Upon arrival, an initial meeting will be arranged with the host mentor to discuss the training
objectives, and regular meetings will be planned throughout the program. Fellows will be fully engaged
in all the activities of the Department, with opportunities to interact with the supervisor and other team
members.
Fellows will be encouraged to actively participate in group meetings and other academic activities,
including workshops, conferences, lectures, and pharma-industry presentations. They will also be
encouraged to present their own work or areas of interest at the Department. Throughout the training,
any specific challenges or requests concerning the training or personal issues will be carefully considered
to ensure the best possible experience for the fellows.
We warmly welcome you to Gothenburg, a city where city life blends harmoniously with nature, the sea,
and beautiful beaches, all surrounded by picturesque parks!
