Curriculum

Curriculum - 6-12 weeks

Fellows will be provided time to settle into their new environment and accommodations. Keys to the
facility will be provided and desk space allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal
welfare, etc.) will be provided by the Institute’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial
meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training and timeline. An experimental plan will
then be discussed and finalized.

The fellow will be fully trained to run each experiment, then allowed to run experiment themselves,
with the trainer present during the first run. Then the fellow will be able to work independently with
support provided when needed. They will also be trained in how to analyze and interpret data and I will
arrange a weekly meeting to discuss and reflect on progress and help decide the next set of
experiments. The fellow must keep adequate and accurate records of their work using the laboratory
book provided.

The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in our research group meetings, and will also be
encouraged to present their work orally at our research group meeting at least once before they
complete their visit.

Towards the end of the training I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their
work (if enough data collected) and/or disseminate the findings in a future conference. They will also be
assisted with identifying additional training opportunities.

There are both high-end and economical hotels located within walking distance of the laboratory.

"There are two locations, and fellows could choose either one. The main lab is in Baltimore, Maryland, and our satellite lab is in Auburn Hills, Michigan."

Dr. Emmert-Buck retired in 2014 after twenty years as an NIH principal investigator to found the Avoneaux Medical Institute. His accomplishments include publishing over 200 articles and book chapters, being an inventor on over 20 allowed patents, winning multiple awards, and using NIH or private inventions to launch five new biotechnology companies. The Institute aims to work at the interface of academia and industry to develop new medical technologies and clinical interventions.
