6-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be guided and supported to settle down into their new environment in the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research. Affordable accommodation which is equipped with all amenities that will make the fellows research stay a memorable one are available.Fellow will fill requisite registration documents and be issued the Institute’s Identity card (ID). A comprehensive orientation will be given to the fellow including laboratory safety guidelines, personal welfare, Institutional guidelines, proper documentation of daily laboratory activities and research ethicsby Dr. Abraham Ajayiof the Molecular Epidemiology Unit (MEU)and myself Prof. Stella Smith. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training, strategies and methodology to achieving them with timelines.
The fellow will be engaged in a hands-on-training of each experiment after a discussion class on the principles and techniques that is involved in each experiment. After which fellows will carry out their independent experiment under the supervision of the trainer. They will be involved in weekly laboratory meetings to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the laboratory including undergraduates and postgraduate studentswhere appraisal of the progress of ongoing projects, discussion on how to tackle encountered challenges and assess the focus and progress of each project.
The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in the units (MEU) annual Molecular Biology Workshop that draws participants from all geo-political regions of the country in collaboration with the African Center of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology.Also the fellow will have the opportunity of attending the NIMR’s international annual research conference where they will be encouraged to submit abstract of their research findings for oral or poster presentation
By the middle of the training the fellow will be trained on manuscript writing and towards the end of the training I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work as a full research paper if substantial data is generated and as short communication if data generated is limited. Opportunities that suit the skill set that have been acquired by fellow in the course of the will be communicated to fellow if available both local and international. Further, the fellow will be have an open window to collaborate with my laboratory at any point of his/her career.
