The Hospital d’Igualada – Division of Orthopaedics
The Hospital d’Igualada – Division of Orthopaedics offers a 4-12weeks Observership program focused on Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy/Arthroplasty Techniques. The division welcomes both local and visiting undergraduates or postgraduates seeking to learn more about Orthopedics and the training opportunities. The candidate will benefit from the combined practices of two major clinical teaching units currently training both residents and fellows, and from exposure to a wide range of Knee and shoulder problems and their surgical solutions.
The main clinical areas of our group are:
Adult joint reconstruction of the knee and shoulder
Arthroscopy procedures of the knee and shoulder
Orthopedic trauma
Weekly Schedule: Day of the week/ 8-9:30 AM/ 9-2:30 PM
Monday: Ward Rounds; Knee Arthroplasty Sessions -Tuesday: Ward Rounds; Upper Limb Operating Sessions -Wednesday: Ward Rounds; Research Protected time -Thursday: Ward Rounds; Knee Arthroscopy sessions -Friday: Ward Rounds; Academics -Saturday/Sunday- On your own-plan local tourism.
WARD ROUNDS. The trainee will be invited to participate in the daily clinical ward rounds, hand-by-hand with the residents and consultants.
KNEE ARTHROPLASTY SESSIONS: The Knee Unit typically provide three TKA cases (Total Knee Arthroplasties) per session. 1-2 sessions are weekly scheduled. The trainee will be invited to scrub with the rest of the team to participate from the surgical procedure. The trainee will not be able to act as a first surgeon in any particular situation. Dr Pelfort X or/and Gil S will supervise the trainee/fellow.
UPPER LIMB SESSIONS: The Upper Limb Unit typically provides three case-mix operating sessions. Shoulder arthroscopy, Total Shoulder Replacement or a full range of Shoulder and Elbow fractures are operated during these sessions. The observer will be invited to scrub with the rest of the team to participate from the surgical procedure. The observer will not be able to act as a first surgeon in any particular situation.
KNEE ARTHROSCOPY SESSION. The Knee Unit typically provides three Knee Surgery with a wide range of procedures: osteotomies around the knee, knee arthroscopies (different meniscal procedures, anterior and posterior ligament reconstructions). The observer will be invited to scrub with the rest of the team to participate from the surgical procedure. The observer will not be able to act as a first surgeon in any particular situation. Dr Pelfort X or/and Gil S will supervise the observer/fellow.
RESIDENTS EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS. Journal club sessions (monthly), and pathologies review sessions complete the residents’ education in our Department. All sessions are focused on Evidence Base Medicine Concepts. The candidate will be invited to actively participate in this sessions.
RESEARCH PROTECTED TIME. Research plays an important role in the development of fellows/observers. The participants will be invited to participate in an ongoing project. New projects or inputs are especially appreciated. Towards the end of the training, Dr. Miquel J will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans for the particular research project (publication, congress dissemination). The participant will be invited to participate in a scientific paper writing process, according to their particular research skills.
