The Maastricht Diabetes Study: A Population-based cohort study

Maastricht University

Host: Maastricht UMC+ and School for Cardiovascular Diseases (CARIM), The Netherlands

Main Areas of Interest

The Maastricht Study is an extensive phenotyping study that focuses on the etiology of type 2 diabetes, its classic complications (cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy), and its emerging comorbidities, including cognitive decline, depression, and gastrointestinal, respiratory and musculoskeletal diseases. The study uses advanced state-of-the-art imaging techniques and extensive biobanking to determine health status in a population-based cohort of 10,000 individuals that is enriched with type 2 diabetes participants. The Maastricht Study is expected to become one of the most extensive phenotyping studies in both the general population and type 2 diabetes participants world-wide. A detailed description of the study design can be found in Schram et al, Eur J Epid 2014. (for references see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=The+Maastricht+Study%5BTitle%5D )

The focus of the current fellowship will be on macrovascular function (e.g. carotid IMT, pulse wave velocity, carotid/brachial/femoral distensibility, ankle-brachial index) or microvascular function (e.g. central retinal microvascular diameters, flicker light-induced retinal arteriolar/venular reactivity, skin heat-induced hyperemia (LDF)). Using multivariable regression analyses, the independent association of macro- or microvascular function with disease biomarker(s) / risk factors / outcomes will be studied. Prior to the start of the fellowship, the specific topic of interest will be established with the fellow.

12 weeks curriculum

Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, GCP, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff. We will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training.

The fellow will be fully trained to the activities of the study center. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the group in epidemiological concepts. They will also be engaged in clinical research. Prior to the training, I will discuss with the fellow his/her plans to prepare and publish their clinical work, which will require a request for a dataset (costs €20,000).

The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in group meetings and other academic activities within the department and School and the University, including attending workshops, conferences, etc. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.

All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
