The University Hospital Aachen is located close to the boarders to The Netherlands and Belgium. It has about 6.000 employees working in 34 clinics and 27 research institutes. The interdisciplinary working staff consists of 8 physicians, 7 academics, nurses, technicians and administrative personnel. The clinic provides a therapy ward (10 beds), polyclinic (diagnostic hybrid imaging), radiochemistry section with clinical and preclinical radiopharmaceutical production and preclinical laboratories for molecular biology and small animal imaging.

Beside common nuclear medical methods applied for therapy and imaging also cutting edge new hybrid methods as well as application of theranostics in prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors are implemented in daily clinical practice. The fellows will get clinical insight into all diagnostic (hybrid) imaging (PET/CT, SPECT/CT) applied for detection of various tumor entities and severe cardiac and lung diseases, as well as imaging of the lymphatic system and further applications.

Ambulatory nuclear medical treatments (e.g. pain therapy with 233-Radium dichloride) as well as inpatient therapies at the ward (e.g. of benign and malignant thyroid diseases with radioactive iodine, liver tumors (SIRT), neuroendocrine tumors (PRRT) and prostate cancer (PSMA-therapy) will be demonstrated.

Techniques You Will Learn

The translational concepts from bench to bedside will be explained and demonstrated and insight into preclinical concepts and projects will be given to the fellows by attending drug and tracer production at our radio-chemical and radio-pharmaceutical lab. The fellows will get basic insight into the theoretical and practical background and will attend small animal studies and learn about small animal hybrid imaging (PET/SPECT/CT). At our molecular biological lab the evaluation and potential translation of newly developed molecular tracers takes place.

The actual preclinical topics and study projects are:

• Development of new PET- and SPECT-tracers • Sensitizing of tumor stem cells • Animal therapy models using different xenografts • Studies on radio-nucleosides as theranostics
