Basics and some Advanced techniques in Molecular Biology and Cell culture as tools for researching Biological Psychiatry issues (A Trialect Partnered Traineeship)
Throughout 12 weeks we will try to cover the basics and some advanced techniques of molecular biology and cell culture as tools for researching biological psychiatry issues, as mental disorders. This schedule is tentative, and you will have a more detailed one as soon as you integrate with our research group.
Weeks 1-3: Understanding our work. Throughout these 3 weeks, we will cover some basic and common techniques for an adequate development of projects in a Molecular Biology’s Lab. These will include making laboratory reagents, biosafety, nucleic acid handling, and PCR among others. In order to maximize your time, it would be interesting to review and previously find information about the indicated subjects. Usually, these issues are covered during the early College’s years. After these 2 weeks, you will be ready to do some basic techniques. These will be key for the next weeks, thus do not forget to obtain criteria for applying them. We will be there to help you.
Week 4-6: Let's get down to business. Throughout these 3 weeks, you will be introduced to more elaborated techniques including brain tissue dissociation and cell sorting. Also, you will understand the basics of flow cytometry. Apart from these techniques, we will also apply all the techniques learned throughout previous weeks. During these weeks you will get some results from your own experiments, or you will have scientific troubles and solved them, or some scientific question will raise, thus you will show to the rest of Lab’s members your progress in a seminary. Don’t worry! It is not an exam: discussion in Science is key, so we will be there to help you.
Week 7-10: Live Science. Throughout these 4 weeks you will be able to develop your own cell culture: now we will have some “living entities” to develop experiments with. We will begin with stem cells and, until the 10th week, we will grow them, nurture them and differentiate them into neurons. This is an advanced skill and requires practice (a lot!) thus we will adapt our schedule to your own progress. After these four weeks, you will understand how to carry on a cell culture and how to handle it. You will be provided with specific literature. However, your contribution and own research will be key to get the most from this training.
Week 11 and 12: Are those neurons? If you have been kind and loving enough (and we know you will be) throughout these 2 weeks we will get the first differentiated neurons. However, we will need to demonstrate this, thus you will carry on flow cytometry experiments as well as basic analysis to achieve this goal. Finally, we will use these weeks to solve any doubt or issue and to close your training in our laboratory.
