Maastricht UMC+ and School for Cardiovascular Diseases (CARIM), The Netherlands
The main research areas of our group are:
A major aim of our program (Vascular complications of diabetes and the metabolic syndrome) is to deliver specific and sensitive diagnostic biomarkers for the identification of patients developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and to identify patients with high risk of micro- and macrovascular complications. The second aim of our program is to obtain insight into the pathophysiology of vascular complications in patients with the metabolic syndrome and diabetes at the molecular level.
In the past years, we have directed our research towards the development of insulin resistance, insulin-resistance-associated adverse large artery changes (atherosclerosis and stiffening), impaired capillary recruitment and (micro)vascular complications. These existing research programs are continued and extended with the integration of findings obtained from epidemiological studies in the different cohorts within in vitro experiments (especially cultures of endothelial cells, adipocytes and hepatocytes), animal models and in man. Current studies focus mainly on the relationships between insulin resistance and microvascular function both in man and in animal models and on the importance of specific advanced glycation end products, chronic low-grade inflammatory activity, and the relation between these phenomena for the development of diabetic complications.

Prior to the start of the fellowship, the specific measurement(s) of interest will be established with the fellow.
Techniques you can learn during your program:
Macrocirculation:
Microcirculation:
6-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, GCP, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff. We will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training.
The fellow will be fully trained to all activities of the study center. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the group in macro-/microvascular concepts. They will also be engaged in clinical research. In addition, we can offer to use data of The Maastricht Study (www.demaastrichtstudie.nl/research ) on your technique of interest in order to prepare a publication. The latter will require a request for a dataset (additional costs €20,000).
The fellow will be given the opportunity to partake in group meetings and other academic activities within the department and School and the University, including attending workshops, conferences, etc. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
Towards the end of the training, I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to collaborate and further develop their clinical work.
All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
