Host: Azienda per l'Assistenza Sanitaria n.5- Friuli Occidentale (AAS5 - Friuli Occidentale) in Pordenone
We have also a lung function unit for the diagnosis and management of chronic pulmonary diseases (i.e. Asthma, severe asthma, copd, ipf, OSAS, etc) and the pulmonary ward with inpatients (24 beds).
Our hospital is located in Pordenone, a city in the north-east of Italy, 30 minutes by speed-train from Venice and well connected with airports (Venice, Treviso) and other Italian and European cities. Pordenone is located at 15 minutes by car from dolomites and during the winter period you can ski (and climb/hiking in summer). The seaside is pretty close (30 minutes). If you need any feedback about the hospital and the city you can search the web or contact somebody working in the Aviano Nato airforce base, located at 10 minutes by car from the hospital.
When do you want to start? If you are planning to have some holidays here in Italy too take your time and just tell us when you want to have your first day. You can also split your internship as you like.
Are you interested in collecting data/any project you'll be happy to share with us during your internship? For clinical research we need approval by our ethical committee (it comes pretty easily but if we can submit paper and project as soon as possible this will help in having it approved when you'll come here).
We would be happy to give you the practical skills to perform independently. You will play an active role during procedures (if you want to have an active role), this is our promise: - bronchoscopy with fiberoptic bronchoscope - rapid on site evaluation (ROSE) of a fine needle aspiration sample - endoscopic procedures (like BAL, byopsies, EBUS, etc...) - thoracoscopy, thoracentesis, thoracic ultrasounds, placement of pleural dwellings
Pordenone is a quiet and safe place. Italian could be a barrier but during bronchoscopy patients are not supposed to speak... for everything else we all speak English and will be happy to translate for you and get you involved with patients. If you are looking for accommodations let us know, the hospital do not have a guest house, but there is a wealth of opportunities (bed&breakfast, small hotels, flats on rent) in Pordenone. We'll help you to find what suits you best, avoiding cheaters. Venice airport is really close, Milan airport is linked to Pordenone with trains (about 4 hours). If you fly on Venice I or someone else will manage to pick you up.
If you want to be an expert in EBUS, definitely Pordenone is the right place.
The more you stay the more you'll be able to get skills. We have also started with EUS and we do also medical thoracoscopy. Possibly autumn will be a better period than July-August as we have a little reduction in activities and we perform EBUS only three times a week during the summer.
