(4.5/5) - 2 reviews

Host: Azienda per l'Assistenza Sanitaria n.5- Friuli Occidentale (AAS5 - Friuli Occidentale) in Pordenone

Main Areas of Interest

  • Interventional pulmonology (bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy)
  • Use of ultrasounds for the diagnosis and management of pleural and respiratory diseases
  • Non-invasive mechanical ventilation and management of in-patients
  • Lung cancer diagnosis and management
  • Palliative care in respiratory medicine
  • Respiratory intensive care
  • Asthma and severe asthma management
  • Pulmonary function tests and sleep medicine
  • copd diagnosis and management
  • Flexible bronchoscopy
  • EBUS
  • EUS
  • Rigid bronchoscopy (we use the Stortz)
  • Cryo-biopsy for interstitial lung diseases diagnosis
  • BAL
  • Rapid on site evaluation of samples with the help of our pathologists
  • Fine-needle aspirations for node samplings
  • Thoracoscopy with pleural biopsies and use of talcum
  • Placement of pigtail and thoracic poudrages
  • Tunnelized cathethers (pleur-x) for chronic pleural effusions
  • Ultrasound-guided thoracentesis and fine needle-aspirations of lung and nodes

We have also a lung function unit for the diagnosis and management of chronic pulmonary diseases (i.e. Asthma, severe asthma, copd, ipf, OSAS, etc) and the pulmonary ward with inpatients (24 beds).

Our hospital is located in Pordenone, a city in the north-east of Italy, 30 minutes by speed-train from Venice and well connected with airports (Venice, Treviso) and other Italian and European cities. Pordenone is located at 15 minutes by car from dolomites and during the winter period you can ski (and climb/hiking in summer). The seaside is pretty close (30 minutes). If you need any feedback about the hospital and the city you can search the web or contact somebody working in the Aviano Nato airforce base, located at 10 minutes by car from the hospital.

When do you want to start? If you are planning to have some holidays here in Italy too take your time and just tell us when you want to have your first day. You can also split your internship as you like.

Are you interested in collecting data/any project you'll be happy to share with us during your internship? For clinical research we need approval by our ethical committee (it comes pretty easily but if we can submit paper and project as soon as possible this will help in having it approved when you'll come here).

We would be happy to give you the practical skills to perform independently. You will play an active role during procedures (if you want to have an active role), this is our promise: - bronchoscopy with fiberoptic bronchoscope - rapid on site evaluation (ROSE) of a fine needle aspiration sample - endoscopic procedures (like BAL, byopsies, EBUS, etc...) - thoracoscopy, thoracentesis, thoracic ultrasounds, placement of pleural dwellings

Pordenone is a quiet and safe place. Italian could be a barrier but during bronchoscopy patients are not supposed to speak... for everything else we all speak English and will be happy to translate for you and get you involved with patients. If you are looking for accommodations let us know, the hospital do not have a guest house, but there is a wealth of opportunities (bed&breakfast, small hotels, flats on rent) in Pordenone. We'll help you to find what suits you best, avoiding cheaters. Venice airport is really close, Milan airport is linked to Pordenone with trains (about 4 hours). If you fly on Venice I or someone else will manage to pick you up.

If you want to be an expert in EBUS, definitely Pordenone is the right place.

The more you stay the more you'll be able to get skills. We have also started with EUS and we do also medical thoracoscopy. Possibly autumn will be a better period than July-August as we have a little reduction in activities and we perform EBUS only three times a week during the summer.

Good about the program: The doctors were very friendly. Dr. Carlo had been a fabulous mentor along with Dr. Umberto and Dr. Mario who showed us their way of doing interventional pulmonology. The language was a bit problem as at times there was difficulty conveying the stuff but it was never a major issue. The nursing staff were great and always helping. I enjoyed their helping nature and tried their best to help us clear our doubts. They never got offended with so many of our queries and always tried to answer them to their best. In addition, they were always open to our suggestions and also incorporated into their treatment plans. I will definitely like to collaborate and work in the future if the opportunity arrives. Areas of improvement: few things that I like to comment is that it is good to know the status of a pupil who as come to learn the stuff and targets on improving areas with focus. It can be done through structured learning methods. The trainee can be given assignments like presentations, case solving, and participation in management so that it will boost the confidence further. It is okay for the future fellows to contact me.

Had a great time in my stay at Pordenone and learned a lot. My hosts were very supportive and taught me a lot. We had an immersive experience in the department functioning and were part of all their daily morning meetings and could observe all procedures and assist in some .Dr Mario and Dr Carlo gave us detailed explanations on the procedure methodology and also we were part of some of the paper publications of the group. Dr Mazza, the head of the department , and Dr Zuccon , head of intervention and bronchoscopy, were also very supportive. I had also traveled to Florence, Venice, and Rome during the weekends and got to see a lot of Italian culture and history. Warm regards and much Thanks again for helping me to have this wonderful experience.

Clinical research would involve the analysis of datasets or designing clinical trials. In contrast, a clinical traineeship is designed to teach you clinical skills to establish an interventional pulmonology center and advance your skills in a particular field.
