4-12 week curriculum
Fellows are integrated in the Resident team and are supported in settling into their new environment (buddy system with a Chief Resident, assistance in finding suitable accommodation, locating local amenities and facilities, etc.). An initial meeting is held to discuss the Fellow’s objectives for their stay. Fellows have the opportunity to participate as trainees in all activities of the Department and, if available, attend IRCAD courses as free-auditors or by enrolling at a reduced rate. Fellows can engage in medical staff meetings, participate in rounds and see clinical activities, as well as be involved in different academic undertakings within the hospital, such as specialized multifunctional cross-disciplinary collegiate meetings.
Fellows participate in all activities as trainees, due to French law not allowing access to patients and operative procedures for doctors whose diploma are not validated in France. Prospective Fellows need to be aware that all of the team’s medical activities are carried out in French as this is the conventional medical language in public hospitals in France. The Senior surgeons and many residents speak English; however, the lack of reasonable knowledge of French language may hinder the Fellow from making the most of the experience in Strasbourg and may alter the nature of the involvement in the different activities, thereby limiting the benefit to only seeing surgical activities.
At the end of the program, you will receive a "Certificate of Traineeship"
"You will get Trialect Fellowship - Traineeship Certificate endorsed by the host institute, although the program will be called Observership according to French Laws"
Before forwarding your application for processing and review by Professor Mutter, we wish to draw your attention to a number of items:
· French law does not allow Trainees to operate on human patients. This means that Trainees are allowed only to watch operative procedures taking place in surgical theatre; they are not permitted to take part in any procedures, even as assistants or scrub technicians.
· All of the team’s medical activities are carried out in French as this is the conventional medical language in public hospitals in France. The Senior surgeons and many residents speak English; however, the lack of French language skills may alter the nature of the involvement in the different activities, thereby limiting the benefit to be had from the Traineeship. A reasonable level knowledge of French language is therefore very much advisable in order to interact with hospital staff and colleagues, and, more widely, to make the most of this experience in Strasbourg.
· The clinical and surgical activity is very reduced during the French summer holidays and during the second half of December. Observerships periods therefore tend to roughly follow the academic year calendar.
· For practical reasons, only a limited number of Trainees can be in attendance at any one time.
· No funding or financial aid is available to the Trainees, who are responsible for their own living costs (see our entry in the Trialect catalogue for suggested accommodation locations).
Heavily discounted rates are available in most cases for IRCAD Fellows, trainees or Course attendees.
Note: Observerships are closed in July and August, and in the 2nd half of December (accommodation is also quite expensive from end November to end December because of the famous Christmas markets...)
Transportation
The University Hospital of Strasbourg is located on the edge of Strasbourg’s compact city center. Most amenities are within walking distance of the hospital; bicycles can be rented on a short-term basis and the public transport system is excellent.
