He is also a research associate with the osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group in the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco. In the last years, Dr. Guglielmi has developed a significant scientific work in the field of Forensic Radiology and he is the Italian Team Leader of the European multicentre project on post-mortem Angio-CT. He is Editor in Chief of British Journal of Radiology/Case Reports and Editor in Chief of EURORAD musculoskeletal section. Dr. Guglielmi is in the Editorial Board of La Radiologia Medica, Skeletal Radiology, European Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, British Journal of Radiology, Journal Clinical Densitometry, Current Radiology Reports, Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging and Singapore Medical Journal. He is currently a manuscript reviewer for Radiology, RadioGraphics, European Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, EURORAD, La Radiologia Medica, Calcified Tissue International, Journal Endocrinological Investigation, Osteoporosis International, Acta Radiologica, Metabolism, Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging, British Journal of Radiology, Skeletal Radiology, and e-Medicine.com.
The main research areas of our group are:
Diagnostic imaging of metabolic bone diseases, body composition imaging, osteoarthritis, forensic radiology, medical writing, neuroradiology (DWI, Perfusion, Spectroscopy), breast imaging. In particular, in our university center, there are several dedicated units (breast unit, prostate unit, head, and neck unit, stroke unit) where the participants can learn in multidisciplinary medical groups.
Regarding Medical Physics, in our center we perform quality assurance for radiotherapy, radiology and nuclear medicine; treatment plans for radiotherapy (3D, IMRT, ARRC therapy and stereotactic therapy and patient dosimetry in radionuclide therapy, are also available.
Regarding Nuclear Medicine activities, in our center we perform nuclear medical diagnosis and therapy. In nuclear medical diagnostics, we perform scintigraphy: cardiac perfusion with dedicated gamma camera with czt crystal, bone scan, thyroid scintigraphy, renal scintigraphy, perfusion cerebral spet, and cerebral spet with datscan, scintigraphy with octreoscan, lymphatic scintigraphy and parathyroid scintigraphy. With the PET/CT we perfom studies with the following radiopharmaceuticals: 18f-fdg, 18f-choline (K prostate) and 18f-flutemetamol (cerebral amyloid plaques). In metabolic radiotherapy we treat post-surgical differentiated thyroid tumors. The nuclear medicine department performs studies for the search of the sentinel node in breast cancer and in melanoma.
The Radiation Therapy Unit consists of 2 linear accelerators (LINAC-Varian) and a simulation CT (Canon). The most frequently treated diseases are breast, prostate, colo-rectal, gynecological, hematologic, head and neck neoplasms and brain and osseous metastases. The techniques currently perfomed range from conformational 3D to slide window intensity modulated radiotherapy, arc therapy , fractioneted stereotactic radiotherapy brain and body image guided with cone beam CT. PET and MRI images are merged with simulation CT.
6-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.) and register at the University, during which an ID card will be issued. A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training and the expected mechanisms of their fulfillment. Experimental plans with realistic timelines will then be decided. The fellow will be fully trained to local medical staff. They will then be allowed to attempt the following departments: Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics. I will arrange a weekly or bi-weekly meeting with the fellow to discuss and reflect on their progress and decide the next steps in their activities plan. The fellow will be given the opportunity to be part in research group meetings and other academic activities within the School and the University, including attending relevant bespoke workshops on research career development (e.g., on manuscript writing, grant writing, networking, etc.). They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a research group meeting at least once before they complete their visit. Towards the end of the training, I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings in a future conference. They will also be assisted to identify existing or future opportunities, globally or within their original work environment, that the training has empowered them to be eligible and competitive for and how they can be assisted to access them and also integrate the knowledge and skills gained into their further research or professional practice roles. All throughout the training any particular challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.
