Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo
The main research areas of our group are:
Our unit has a strong background and expertise in clinical epidemiology and medical statistics, and all that this implies (study, design, study implementation, statistical analyses, publication of results etc etc.); it is composed by 3 medical doctors with dual specialization (one clinical and one statistical), 1 biologist with specialization in medical statistics, 1 biologist with Senior Clinical Research Assistant and study coordination qualifications, 1 medical librarian, administrative staff. The Units’ tasks are assisting in project writing and proposal, guidance on study protocol drafting and finalization, implementation of data collection with Electronic Data Capture Records, Statistical analyses planning and implementation, publication of results. The unit has also a strong experience in teaching and training on all research methodology issues, and organises a 400-hours course on Biomedical research methods and clinical study monitoring (delivering a certificate valid for Clinical Research Assistant role), plus several short-term modules (Scientific Writing, Statistical methods for biomedical research, Project design and management, Systematic reviews and meta-analyses Measuring research impact etc etc).
The Unit has been providing teaching in biomedical research methods to the Master course at the University of Pavia for the past 6 years (on average, 100 teaching hours per year). Clinical research methods you will learn during your program here:
definition of research questions
literature search in the main database (PubMed, EMBASE, Cinhal, Cochrane etc)
study design: observational and experimental (randomized clinical trials)
eCRF design (via the REDCap platform)
main reporting guidelines
principles of statistical analyses (including sample size calculations)
principles of scientific writing
submission to the ethical committee and other regulatory requirements
6-12 weeks curriculum
The fellow will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.) and register at the Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo. A desk space will be allocated. I will introduce the fellow to the staff, and arrange a preliminary meeting to plan the details of the personalized training program. The preliminary meeting will cover:
Assess expectations from the mentorship of both fellow and mentor
Assess educational needs in general research methods
knowledge: the organized system of data and information that the fellow learns, understand, memorize and use in daily professional activities.
abilities (skills): individual acts that the fellow performs using knowledge and tools
competences: the ability to apply knowledge and abilities, together with personal, social and methodological attitudes in the work setting and in professional/personal development (= responsibility and autonomy, in the European Qualifications Framework EQF https://ec.europa.eu/ploteus/en)
Plan subsequent training activities, also in agreement with the relevant professionals
The fellow will be presented with a long list of training modules and topics, among which s/he will set his/her educational priorities. Broadly speaking, the topics include:
setting research objectives
study design for observational clinical research
study design for randomized controlled trials and other interventional research on patients
ethical issues
pharmacology and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics
regulatory requirements and study monitoring
basic and advanced statistical methods
literature search and systematic review of the literature with or without meta-analysis
scientific writing
project writing and grant application
evidence base medicine
Information technology tools for biomedical and clinical research (including database and eCRF creation, cloud and other tools)
Evaluation of research and researchers (H-index, IF, etc)
Ideally, during the traineeship, the fellow will be mentored to write at least a study protocol. It is therefore advisable that the fellows provide, prior to the initiation of the program, 2 or 3 clinical research ideas to be developed further during the fellowship. Throughout the duration of the project, the mentor and the trainee will have weekly face-to-face meetings to evaluate progress, discuss problems, difficulties, and barriers, assess new/changing needs in the field of clinical research methods. The fellow will be given the opportunity to partake in research group meetings and other academic activities within the hospital. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a research group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
If interested in Laboratory techniques, our research hospital has a large number of research laboratories in several settings: cell therapy (dedicated cell factory available), immunology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry. If known in advance, training in this areas can also be offered.
