Main Areas of Interest

Lecturing and Teaching:

This muldisciplinary fellowship is designed for healthcare professionals (including specialists and nurses) who care for people with cancer and their families. With a focus on breast, ovarian, prostate, and colorectal cancer, its main objecves are:

To increase the level of cancer genetics knowledge of healthcare professionals involved in the care of people and families affected by cancer.
To improve paent access to relevant cancer genetic testing and appropriate genetic counselling.
To promote a muldisciplinary approach to genetic testing in families impacted by cancer.
To increase the level of confidence of healthcare professionals in discussing cancer genetics and gentiec testing

Techniques You Will Learn

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the key principles in cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment.

Make use of available guidelines for cancer genetic testing and tools for familial cancer risk assessment.

Idenfy patients for whom genetic testing and genetic counselling may be appropriate, and work appropriately with specialist genetic services in a muldisciplinary cancer care setting.

Understand the ethical principles of genetic counselling and informed consent and their applicaon in the context of cancer genetic testing.

Be aware of available opons for genetic testing, and be able to understand, interpret, and communicate genetic test results, including the limitaons and implicaons.

Idenfy appropriate cancer risk management guidelines based on family history and/or genetic test results.

Modules

Tasks and Timeline:

Module 1 (Week 1) Cancer Genetics

Provides the learner a solid foundational understanding of cancer genetics and inheritance, including how to record a cancer family history/pedigree.

Module 2 (Week 2) Guidelines for Cancer Genetic Testing

Discusses general guidelines and tools for idenfying patients and families who may benefit from access to cancer genetic testing for cancer treatment or risk assessment. Identifies national and international guidelines for access to cancer genetic testing.

Module 3 (Week 3) Genec Counselling and Consent for Cancer Genetic Testing

Discusses the importance of appropriate genetic counselling prior to genetic testing. Explores the ethical principles and practical applicaon of genetic counselling and informed consent. Develops an understanding of the indications for referral to a specialist genetic service.

Module 4 (Week 4) Choosing a Genetic Test and Interpreng Results

Explores current available genetic testing options in general, and considerations for choosing a test and/or provider. Reviews the potential outcomes of genetic testing and interpretation of results. Develops an understanding of the limitaons and potential sources of error in genetic testing.

Module 5 (Week 5) Risk Assessment and Management in Familial Cancer

Develops skills in assessing cancer risk in families with or without genetic test results, and understanding residual risk after a “normal” genetic test result. Identifies tools for risk assessment, and naonal and international guidelines for risk management.
