University of Perugia and Perugia General Hospital, Italy
Radiation oncologists at Perugia University General Hospital use the most-advanced technologies to deliver powerful doses of radiation directly to the tumor with high precision, reducing the number of sessions required for radiation treatment in comparison with more-conventional approaches. The radiation oncology team works to offer the highest level of safety and efficacy during every step of the treatment. Physicians collaborate with medical physicists to create an individualized radiation treatment plan for each patient. The Centre treats about 1,500 new patients every year, most of whom are then routinely followed up. Facilities include 1 projector for high-dose rate brachytherapy as well as apparatus for external-beam radiotherapy (2 linear accelerators and 1 tomotherapy).
External-beam radiotherapy is delivered with advanced techniques such as intensity-modulated/helical radiotherapy. Image-guided radiotherapy is performed. The Centre is supported by a large and very active voluntary association.Traineeships for qualified and trainee physicians will provide observation of all clinical activities, participation in seminars, clinical case discussions and clinical meetings. Trainees who visit during the University semester will be able to attend lectures in the School of Medicine at no extra cost. Traineeships in medical physics will focus on specific areas e.g. treatment planning and quality controls of apparatus etc. Voluntary association traineeships will focus on the set-up, organization, fund-raising and running of such an association.
Traineeships are available in:
Traineeships 1a to 5 are reserved for qualified or trainee radiation oncologists and clinical oncologists and 1-4 for qualified or trainee medical physicists.
1) Routine clinical management of radiotherapy delivery to treat cancer in all parts of the body
1a)Total body irradiation, as delivered by linear accelerator and
1b) Total marrow/ total nodal irradiation, as delivered by tomotherapy
Both are part of the conditioning regimen to stem cell transplantation for acute leukaemias. In the field of haematology, radiotherapy treatments are also available for patients with Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
2) Stereotactic brain and body radiotherapy
This ablative technique, is used daily in our Radiation Oncology Centre. Stereotactic body radiotherapy is delivered in up to 5 daily fractions to cure primary tumours and oligometastatic disease. Stereotactic brain radiotherapy is delivered in a single session (radiosurgery) or in multiple fractions for patients with cerebral metastases.
3) High-dose rate brachytherapy
This highly skilled technique is used, as boost or radical treatment, for gynaecological, breast, skin, head and neck, esophageal, bronchial and bile duct tumours.
4) Chemo-radiotherapy
Chemotherapy in combination with radiotherapy is delivered to treat brain, head and neck, cervical-uterine and rectal cancers. Management of these patients requires extensive skills and experience.
5) Hormone therapy
This is for patients with breast and prostate cancer, who may also receive the new drugs for castration-resistant disease.
6) Psycho-oncology (reserved for qualified or trainee psychiatrists and psychologists)
A psychiatrist offers single or group therapy for all cancer patients requiring psychological support.
7) Organising a voluntary association (reserved for anyone interested in setting up such a support group or already engaged in one)
Trainees will observe the association’s daily work within the Centre, learn how it is involved in delivering complementary therapies (music therapy, aromatherapy, plantar reflexology, relaxing meditation) and see how it fund-raises
